We are looking for an experienced Principal Epidemiologist (PhD) to join our team!

Role

ICA’s Health Technology Assessment (HTA) team supports clients (e.g., federal organizations) in their mission to protect and promote public health by conducting Systematic Reviews (SRs) in a wide variety of clinical content areas. Joining the HTA team is an opportunity to help inform decisions related to pharmacological and medical devices and thus improve the lives and well-being of millions of people.

ICA is looking for a highly skilled individual with solid experience in conducting SRs to join us in this quest. The Epidemiologist’s primary responsibility will be to conduct rapid reviews. Successful candidates will have a strong background in research design and methods and must hold a PhD in Epidemiology. Prior experience working in a fast-paced consulting environment is preferred.

Responsibilities

The Principal Epidemiologist will be responsible for conducting SRs (mostly rapid reviews) of high-priority pharmacologic and device-safety or coverage-decision topics. Ability to work independently to take a project conception through protocol development phase, execution of the protocol, and final report submission within the project deadline.

  • Conduct rapid systematic reviews of varying scope
  • Ensure understanding of client needs and scope for a variety of client requests
  • Develop key questions
  • Develop and implement the research protocol including PICOTS
  • Collaborate with information-retrieval specialists on conducting appropriate search strategies
  • Use search results to identify and select appropriate clinical literature to address key questions
  • Screen title/abstracts – sometimes several thousand references – for inclusion based on the PICOTs framework
  • Abstract study data into data tables
  • Mastery at assessing risk-of-bias, familiarity with relevant tools
  • Mastery in recognizing a variety of study designs
  • Ability to interpret statistical results accurately
  • Experience with GRADE system for assessing the strength of a body of evidence
  • Excellent writing skills/ability to summarize the reports results in narrative form
  • Ability to work well alone or in small groups, as dictated by the project’s needs
  • Ability to handle ≥2 projects simultaneously
  • Ability to perform meta-analysis preferred
  • Meet client deadlines for deliverables

    Qualifications/Minimum Requirements

    • Minimum 10 years' experience conducting SRs
    • Doctorate Degree in Epidemiology (required)
    • Ability to shift priorities while contributing to or leading multiple projects
    • Prior experience in working with external stakeholders
    • Demonstrated qualitative and analytical skills with a strong understanding of statistical and research methodology
    • Prior experience performing SRs as project/methodological lead
    • Strong analytical, critical thinking and communication skills including technical writing and editing
    • Knowledge or expertise with pharmaceutical and health care device safety topics preferred
    • Experience mentoring and teaching research assistants and entry-level research analysts preferred
    • Ability to obtain a Public Trust Clearance (required). Must have lived in the United States for a minimum of 3 consecutive years over the past 5 years.

    Preferred Additional Qualifications

    • Previous experience working and/or collaborating with researchers from federal government agencies whose mission relates to public health (e.g., NIH, CDC, FDA, HRSA, or other HHS agencies).

    Location: This position is remote, but our clients are primarily based in the DC-metro area. While we encourage flexible work hours based on location, it is essential that the successful candidate be responsive to client scheduling. Occasional travel (< 5% time) to the DC-metro area will be required at minimum twice a year.
